In Progress: Kitchen and Living Room

We knew that the long and narrow kitchen that had no (real) windows wouldn’t do it for us. So we decided to take down the wall between the kitchen and the living room, and turn it all into a kitchen/dining room area. Tearing down the wall was not as much fun as we had thought. There was lots of dust, lots. Fortunately we had family members to help us, cause there was no way we could have done this alone. We also had to put in iron beams in order to keep the ceiling from coming down. My granddad covered the beams in wood.
When the wall had come down, and all the debris had been taken away, we put the hardwood floors in, which was very easy and kinda fun. Then the walls had to be painted. This proved to be much harder than expected, because there was really old wallpaper on the living room walls, which could hardly be removed. However, the biggest problem was the living room ceiling. It had a very peculiar structure, because my mother, back in the 80ies, had the crazy idea to decorate the ceiling with lots of lumps. And those lumps stuck like crazy, so we had to sand them all away. Pressing that sander against the ceiling made our arms very wobbly very quickly. Never, ever will we ever want to do that again. Once the lumps were removed, however, the room looked much airier and lighter, and the end result was totally worth it, don’t you think?
